I know VERY little about Linzy (alternate spellings: Linzie, Lindsey), who is my 3x great grandfather, and have had little luck finding information. I know he was in the 42nd Infantry from the civil war index, there it spells his name 'Lindsey.' I know sometime around 1866 he must have stopped supporting the confederate side because he married Sarah Sally Morriss. Linzy died in Webster County, Missouri in 1926 and is buried in Seymour, Missouri. I have not been able to identify his parents (though I have reason to believe his father might have been named Dave) and would very much like to learn more about him - there are family rumors that he fled North Carolina under suspicion for an accidental murder. If anyone can provide more information, please feel free to contact me.

Zeb was born in 1839 in Wolf Pit Twp. Richmond County, N C. His date of death is uncertain but about 1865/66. He enlisted 5 Fen 1862 in Major George C Gibbs Battalion of Prison Guards at Salisbury, NC. enlisted by Capt. C.W. Bradshaw. The Prison Guards were disbanded 22 April 1862, and the troops were merged with the 42nd Regiment NC Infantry. Battles: Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, Fort Fisher, Ware Bottom, Sugar loaf and Bentonville. The Regiment surrendered at Durham Station NC on 26 April 1865. He was the father-in-law of my 1st cousin 3 x removed.

Amos Wright enlisted with Company A in 1863 following his 18th birthday. He was wounded at Cold Harbor, Virginia in May 1864. He was in the hospital later that year, and was sent home to recover. He later served at Fort Fisher, and was captured at Battery Anderson on 12/25/1864 and released from Point Lookout on 6/17/1865. He is my Great Great Grandfather.

James Franklin was from Iredell County and on his tombstone it states CSA 42nd Inf. 2nd Leiu. with his date of birth 1/24/1840 and date of death 2/23/1904.

They had a daughter named Ava Delia Lowrance who was born 1879. According to the 1910 census he was living at 135 Powers Ferry Road, Marietta, Georgia. He could read and write and owned his home and he was a farmer. He died April 21, 1926 at age 83, and is buried in Marietta, Georgia.

Martin Alexander Boon was born September 13, 1829 in Orange County, North Carolina, and died May 07, 1907 in Neola, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. He married Eliza Smith abt. 1851 in North Carolina. He was the oldest son of Andrew Boon & Jane Hobbs. Martin enlisted in Company C, 42nd NC Infantry on 11 March 1862 at the age of 33. Captured by union forces at the Battle of Wyse's Fork in Kinston, NC near Wilmington. He was the half brother of my 2nd great grandfather Elijah Boon of Alleghany County, Nc.

Bryant Has 9 cards in his archival file. He was 23 when he enlisted on 20 Oct. 1863 at Wilmington, New Hanover County NC. He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia in July of 1864 and sent home on medical furlough. Returned to his unit and fought the good fight. Son of Joseph Cauble and Nancy Hudson. Born abt. 1825 in Rowan County, NC. Franklin was living in Albemarle, Stanly County, NC with his mother and siblings when he enlisted in Co C in Albemarle, NC on 28 Feb. 1863. Company C was mustered in at Salisbury, NC. Prior to enlisting, Franklin earned his living as a stage coach driver.

After military training in Salisbury, NC, Co C served for a period of time as guards at the prison for Union soldiers in Salisbury, Rowan County, NC.


Franklin was captured 3 Jun. 1864 at Cold Harbor, he was sent to Point Lookout, Md. and then transferred to Elmira, NY. The prisoner transfer from Point Lookout to Elmira consisted of 833 men. They left Point Lookout on 12 July by the steam ship 'Crescent', went to Jersey City, NJ arriving 15 July at 4 AM. There they boarded a train for Elmira, NY. At 3 PM near Shohola, Pa., the prison train crashed head on with a coal train in a sharp blind curve. There was a heavy loss of prisoners and Union guards. This train wreck is known as 'The Great Shohola Train Wreck'. The remaining prisoners arrived Elmira, NY around 9:30 PM on Saturday evening 16 July 1864. Official Union records recorded and documented the men into the Elmira Prison on Sunday 17 July 1864. He died in Elmira Prison 28 Oct. 1864. Franklin is buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery, Confederate section in grave #718.


Franklin was mistakenly buried under the name of Franklin Cooper who was also in Co C, 42nd NC, and also from Albemarle, Stanly County, NC. Both Franklin Cauble and Franklin Cooper enlisted in Co C at the same time and both were captured at Cold Harbor at the same time.

Franklin Cooper did not die in the Elmira Prison but was paroled and returned to Stanly County NC. Franklin Cooper died 2, Oct. 1924, and is buried at Silver Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Aquadale, Stanly County, North Carolina.

Franklin Cooper has a headstone at grave #718 in the Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, NY. However, Pvt. Franklin Cauble, also of Co C, 42nd NC is actually buried in grave #718 which was mistakenly marked for Pvt. Franklin Cooper. Pvt. Cauble and Pvt. Cooper both enlisted in Co C at the same time in Albermarle, Stanly County, NC. They were both captured the same day at Cold Harbor, were both sent to Point Lookout, MD., and were both transferred to Elimar, NY. Pvt. Franklin Cauble died in Elmira, NY and Pvt. Franklin Cooper returned to Stanly County, NC.

Efird resided in Stanly County, NC and enlisted at Salisbury, NC as a corporal. Was captured at the Battle of Wyse Fork, NC

I've only got sketchy information, but what I have says Goodwin (maybe Goodin) enlisted with his son, John Hinson, out of Stanly County, NC in 1862 for the $50 bounty. He was 47 and had 7 children. While the regiment was in Wilmington, he tried to desert to get home to a sick wife and the remainding children. He was captured and sentenced to execution. John fixed his last meal. He made his own coffin and rode out to his execution sitting on the coffin in the back of a wagon. It took two volleys to complete the sentence.

Enlisted in 1862 with his father, Goodwin Hinson. His father tried to desert while the regiment was in the Wilmington area to return home to his sick wife and remaining 6 six children. He was captured and sentenced to death. John fixed his father's last meal, breakfast. His father told him to seek no revenge as the sergeant was only doing his duty. John remained with the regiment and was captured on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor. He was held for a short time at the White House (Virginia) then transferred to Elmira, NY. He was released in laste June 1865 after taking his oath.

Abraham was born in Stanly County, NC in 1821. He has 23 items in his archival file. Enlisted in Capt. James A Howells Co. on 24 March 1862 and mustered at Salisbury, NC into Gibbs' Prison Guards Battalion. He is paid his $50 Bonus and is enlisted for 3 years or the war. His is 41 years old. He served until the end of the war. Oct 1864 he is absent, sick in the hospital at Richmond. On 2 April 1865 he is a patient being treated for a hernia [left side] at Jackson Hospital at Richmond when he is taken prisoner.

Battles: Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, Fort Fisher, Ware Bottom, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Jackson's Valley Campaign.

He married Wincey Jane Carpenter of Stanly County and had serval children. His date of death is unknown, his last appearance is on the 1880 census. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed. May the Lord rest his soul.

Assigned to Gibb's Prison Guards by Col. Gibb's. Sent to Virginia he is sick in the hospital at Lynchburg, Va in Aug 1862. CMR for April 1864 has him promoted to 3rd Corporal. His regiment is assigned to General's Martin and Kirkland's brigade. Battles at Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege[ trenches] Ware Bottom, Sugar Loaf. He married Susan Ann Reavis in 1865 and died abt 1821 in Clifton, Spartenburg, SC. He fought the good fight & may God grant him rest.

Attempting to determine date of death, cause of death, and battle . (circa June 1864)

George W. Laird was enlisted as a Private on March 18, 1862 at the age of 48 in Davie County, North Carolina. He was killed on June 17, 1864 in Petersburg, VA and as far as we can tell was buried in a mass grave there in Petersburg, VA. His brothers Levi and Samuel also served in the 42nd North Carolina Infantry.

Franklin Augustus Clifford, the 4th of 12 children of James Grey and Rebecca {Coker} Clifford, was born August 5, 1845 in Mocksville Township in Davie County, North Carolina. His wife, Louise Ellen, the 3rd of 7 children of Richard Owen and Grace (Eaton) Wiseman, was born also in Mocksville Township on August 25, 1846.

As Civil War began, Franklin entered his service and was enlisted with Company F of the 42nd Regiment at Salisbury, North Carolina on May 1862. At the time of enlistment, his serviced papers revealed his physical characteristices, having blond complexion, red hair, blue eyes and height of 5 feet and 6 and ¾ inches. On March 10, 1865, during a battle he was captured near Kingston, North Carolina and arrived with his fellow prisoners at New Bern, North Carolina on March 16th. He was later transferred to Point Lookout Prison Camp for the Confederates in Maryland but was finally released on June 24th shortly after the end of the war.

A few months after his return from the Civil War, he married Louisa at the home of her parents in Davie County, on February 22, 1866. (Michael Clifford and His Family, Frank Powers 10 September 1993)

He suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh on 9 March 1865 in a battle at Kinston, NC. He was transferred to CSA Hospital #3 at Greensboro NC. He survived the war and died 12 Sept 1922. Noah was one of 7 family members [youngest] who served in Co H 42nd NC Infantry. Their is only one source for this and no CMR's in the archives. He enlisted first in Co. G 1st Junior Reserves on 10 May 1862 as he was 16 or 17 years old. I did find a CMR for him in this unit. At what time this unit was taken into the 42nd is unknown. He was born 2 April 1845 in Stanley Co. NC. and died 29 Aug 1915. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed Eva Ann Brooks. They are buried at Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Ch. Oakboro, Stanley Co. NC. His gravestone gives his unit as 1st Junior Reserves.

John was 41 years old. Enlisted in Capt. Jackson M Hartsell's Co of 42nd NC Infantry. He mustered in at Salsbury NC on 9 April 1862. He was assigned to George H. Gibb's Prison Guards Batt'n. Promoted to rank of 5th Sgt. on 10 May 1862. 30 June he was home sick with remarks that there was not much probability of recovery.
He recovered and rejoined his unit and served until the end of the war. Note that he left as a Private as the rank of 5th Sgt had been abolished. Fought at Cold Harbour, Petersburg Siege, Ware Bottom Church & Sugar Loaf.. Assigned to General's Martin & Kirkland's Brigade. Buried at Bethel Baptist Ch. Iredell Co. NC

Myrick was born 18 Feb 1845 in Stanley Co. NC. The nearest post office was Albemarle. He enlisted there on 1 March 1863. He was about 17 years old. He has 11 cards in his archival file. He is shown in his company thru the war. The last CMR shows him in the CSA Hospital #4 at Wilmington, NC on 24 Jan 1865, suffering from Acute Rheumatism. He is discharged 3 Feb 1865 back to duty. His Company is assigned to General's Martin & Kirkpatrick's Brigade. His regimental overview places him in the battles of Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Ware Bottom Church & Sugar Loaf..He died 9 Sept 1872 as a young man hastened by ill health due to the war. He is buried at Big Lick Baptist Church, Stanley Co. NC. He was my 3rd cousin 4 x removed.

Alexander was born 10 Oct 1840 in Union County, NC. He has 19 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 9 April 1862 at Salisbury in Capt. Jackson M Hartsell's Co. of Vols. He served the entire war. Attached to General's Martin and Kirkland's Brigades, Hardee's Corps. Fought at Tabor, Chowan River, Wilmington, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Seige, Crater, Fort Fisher, and Bentonville. Capture near Kinston, NC on 10 March 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, Md. where he swallowed the yellow dog and was released 29 June 1865. He died 5 Nov 1919 in Goose Creek Twp, Union Co. NC. and is buried in Rocky River, Truelight Church Cem. in Monroe, Union Co. NC. He was the father-in-law of my cousin.

Milton Smith was my ancestor and was born on 05/27/1844 and died 03/22/1909. He served in the Confederate Army from 1861-1865.

He is buried in the Willow Valley Cemetery, Mooresville, NC.

Moses was born 2 Oct 1833 in Stanley County NC. He is 27 y/o when he enlisted in Capt Jackson M Hartsell's Co Vols. Gibb's Prison Guards. Consolidations and reorganizations placed it in Generals Martin & Kirkland's Brigade as Co. H 42nd Regiment NC Infantry. 30 June 1862 finds him sick in camp. In June 1863 he is a teamster for the brigade. 10 March 1865 he is captured near Kinston NC and taken to Point Lookout Md. and released 20 June 1865. He saw action in several major battles and skirmishes.. Including those along the NC coast line as well as Cold Harbor, & Ware Bottom. His is the Father in Law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Hardy was born in 1835 in Stanley County NC. He enlists at age 26 in Capt Jackson M Hartsell's Co. 42nd Vols. which becomes Co H. enlisted 25 March and entered 9 April 1862 at Albemarle, Stanley Co. NC. He musters into Confederate Service at Salisbury, NC 10 May 1862. His Regiment is attached to General's Martin & Kirkland's Brigade. Hardy is plagued by illness. He contracts Typhoid which dogs him to his grave. He has 25 cards in his archival file, many relate to his illness. The only battle I found that he was in was Cold Harbor. He died in CSA Hospital #4 at Wilmington NC on 25 April 1864. His personal effects was $13 dollars. He left behind a young widow and a small child. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Tom was not an ancestor/relative of mine but was from the same western North Carolina mountians as my Land ancestors. (He was the one about whom the ballad 'Hang Down
Your Head Tom Dooley' was written after he was executed
in 1866 for the murder of Laura Foster. My ancestor/relative Thomas C. Land ( listed on this site with the 1st and 53 N.C. ) wrote a ballad ' The Death of Laura Foster. ' His brother,Rev.Linville Land reportedly made Tom Dooley's coffin. Dooley, according to oral history, ' sat on his coffin and played the fiddle' on the way to the execution.

His father Noah and his grand father Joseph Thomas Baucom also were in the fight. He died 25 May 1887 and is buried in Tirzah Presbyterian Church at Waxhaw, Union County NC. He is the father in law of wife of 4rh Cousin 3 x removed.

Leander was married to Martha Caroline Land, daughter of my gr gr gr Uncle, William Thomas Land of Wilkes County, N. C. Her brother,Lt.Thomas C. Land ( 1st and 53rd N.C. ) listed on this site.
